Dealing with Mom Burnout: Practical Tips for Reclaiming Your Energy and Joy

Hey moms!  We are Caitlin and Chelsea, two Registered Psychologists, best friends and moms who have been burnt out AF!!!  We need to talk about something that doesn’t get enough attention but is all too real: mom burnout. You know, that feeling of being constantly exhausted, overwhelmed, and like you’re running on empty? The feeling of being stretched so thin, you don't feel like you are doing anything well!!

Yeah, that’s burnout, and it’s something many moms face. But don't worry, you're not alone, and there are ways to manage it. Let’s chat about what mom burnout is, how to recognize it, and practical steps to deal with it.

Understanding Mom Burnout

What is Mom Burnout?

Mom burnout is MUCH more than just feeling tired. It’s a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion that results from the continuous stress and demands of motherhood. It can make you feel like you’re just going through the motions, with no energy or joy left for the things you used to love.

Signs of Mom Burnout

Recognizing the signs of burnout is crucial. Here are some common symptoms:

  • Physical Exhaustion: Constant fatigue, even after sleeping.
  • Emotional Drain: Feeling irritable, frustrated, or overwhelmed.
  • Mental Fog: Difficulty concentrating or making decisions.
  • Loss of Interest: No longer finding joy in activities you once enjoyed.
  • Increased Illness: Frequent headaches, colds, or other illnesses.

Causes of Mom Burnout

Societal Expectations and Pressures

Let’s face it, society often sets ridiculously high standards for moms. From being the perfect parent to maintaining a spotless home and thriving career, the pressure can be immense.

Lack of Sleep and Time for Yourself

Newborns, toddlers, and sometimes even older kids can wreak havoc on your sleep schedule. Plus, finding time for self-care often feels impossible when you’re juggling a million tasks.

Balancing Multiple Roles

Whether you’re a stay-at-home mom, a working mom, or somewhere in between, balancing your roles as a parent, partner, and possibly an employee can be overwhelming.

Limited Support Systems

Feeling isolated or not having enough help can significantly contribute to burnout. We all need a village, but sometimes it feels like we’re doing it all alone.

The Impact of Mom Burnout

Effects on Physical and Mental Health

Burnout can lead to chronic fatigue, anxiety, depression, and a weakened immune system. It’s not just feeling tired; it’s a whole-body experience that affects your overall health.

Impact on Relationships and Parenting

When you’re burned out, patience is in short supply, which can strain relationships with your partner, children, and even friends. It can also affect your parenting, making it harder to stay calm and present.

Long-Term Consequences

Ignoring burnout can lead to serious long-term consequences, such as chronic health issues and persistent mental health problems. That’s why it’s so important to address it early.

Practical Tips for Dealing with Mom Burnout

Self-Care Strategies

Importance of Self-Care

Self-care isn’t selfish; it’s essential. Taking time for yourself can help recharge your batteries and improve your mood. We know it's easier said than done, but we want you to take a look and see where you can find a bit of time to implement something for YOU!

Simple Self-Care Activities

  • Exercise: Even a short walk can boost your energy and mood.
  • Sleep: Prioritize sleep whenever possible. Remember sleep comes before having a spotless house
  • Nutrition: Eat balanced meals and stay hydrated. Keep your water bottle close to you.
  • Mindfulness: Notice how you are feeling in your body a couple times a day and just notice how paying attention to your body feels.

Time Management

Prioritizing Tasks and Delegating Responsibilities

Not everything needs to be done right now. Prioritize your tasks and delegate whenever possible. Let go of perfectionism and focus on what’s truly important.

Creating a Flexible but Structured Routine

A flexible routine can provide structure without being too rigid. This can help you manage your time better and reduce stress.

Learning to Say No Without Guilt

It’s okay to say no to extra responsibilities that don’t serve you or your family. Set boundaries and stick to them.

Seeking Support

Building a Support Network

Having a strong support network can make a world of difference. Connect with family, friends, and other moms who understand what you’re going through.

The Role of Partners

Partners can play a significant role in alleviating burnout. Open communication about your needs and sharing responsibilities can help lighten the load.

Professional Help

Sometimes, talking to a professional can provide the support and tools you need to manage burnout. Therapy and counseling can be incredibly beneficial.

Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques

Benefits of Mindfulness

Mindfulness can help you stay present and manage stress. It’s about focusing on the here and now, rather than getting lost in worries about the future or regrets about the past.

Easy Relaxation Exercises

  • Deep Breathing: Practice deep breathing exercises to calm your mind and body.
  • Meditation: Even a few minutes of deep breathing and noticing your feelings in your body can be hugely beneficial
  • Journaling: Writing down your thoughts and feelings can be a great release.

Personal Story: Sarah's Journey to Overcoming Burnout

Sarah, a mother of three, felt like she was drowning in responsibilities. She was constantly tired, snapping at her kids, and feeling disconnected from her partner. One day, she realized she couldn’t keep going this way and decided to seek help.

Sarah started by talking to her partner about how she was feeling. Together, they came up with a plan to share household responsibilities more equally. She also reached out to a therapist who specialized in postpartum mental health.

Through therapy, Sarah learned to prioritize self-care. She started going for walks in the morning, which gave her some much-needed alone time and a chance to clear her head. She also joined a local mom’s group, where she found support and understanding from other moms going through similar challenges.

Sarah began practicing mindfulness and deep breathing exercises to help manage her stress. She set boundaries and learned to say no without feeling guilty. Over time, these changes made a significant difference. She felt more energized, patient, and connected to her family.

The Importance of Counseling

Professional Guidance

Professional counseling can provide valuable guidance and support. A therapist can help you identify the root causes of your burnout and develop strategies to manage it.

Safe Space to Talk

Counseling offers a safe, non-judgmental space to express your feelings and concerns. This can be incredibly therapeutic and help you feel less alone.

Developing Coping Strategies

A therapist can teach you effective coping strategies, such as emotional regulation, thought reframing, and setting boundaries, all of which can be incredibly helpful when it comes to preventing burnout.

Benefits of Virtual Counseling

Convenience and Comfort

Virtual counseling allows you to access therapy from the comfort of your home. This can be especially helpful for busy moms who may find it challenging to attend in-person sessions.
